Streets of NYC photoshoot inspiration and post-production tips

Here is a little “city street” NYC family portrait session to inspire you. We chose to shoot just outside of Central Park because I had previously done family portraits for these guys in the park. We wanted natural portraits that were unique and captured the spirit of the city. For me, that means we need to keep moving. The more motion, the more natural and alive the images become. Of course, we did stop here and there to take more traditional portraits in our surroundings.

The one snag I felt after looking at the images when I got home had to do with the colors. My eyes need to feel everything gel…the subjects, their clothing, the background. I was struggling with the greenery of the trees and the bright yellow of the cabs mixed with the clothing my clients were wearing. Im showing you a before and after below so you can see how things looked straight from my camera (images on the bottom the grid below) and how I tweaked the colors and tones to make me happy with the colors (images at the top of the grid featured below).

In photoshop I adjusted the colors of yellow, green and cyan by toning them down and upping the magenta. It also effected the tone of the yellow street lines and lights. By doing this I feel the purple dress is complimented against the golden tones of the trees (see middle picture, leaves above models head). The portrait of the family on the bench works better in this tonal palette now. Its minor things like this, that up the level of your images. I don’t like to go crazy in post production, but things like a little color tweak can go a long way.

Manhattan Family Photographer | Miles at the park

Today I met Miles and his parents for a portrait session at the park. Shooting in Manhattan in the spring is a favorite of mine...its not too hot, the flowers are in bloom and there's just something really special about the entire vibe. Since we met early in the day, the park was pretty quite and we were able to take full advantage of our surroundings. Capturing this little guy play and explore was great fun- hopefully you can tell from the pictures!

New Jersey Family Photographer | Scarlett turns 2

Yes, its that time of year again! My daughter turns 2 today...what?!? Yes. Its true. Shocking, yet true. The past few months have been a blast now that she talks up a storm (the facial expressions during her stories KILL me every time). What a fun, crazy (tiring) and entertaining experience this thing they call motherhood is. Happy birthday my precious baby girl!

Manhattan Family Photographer | Isabel turns 1

This past weekend I met up with Isabel for her 1 year shoot. We were able to mix it up with some indoor portraits and a few quick-and chilly- outdoor shots. The changes that take place from 6 months to 1 year of age are really quite astonishing to witness and I am so honored to document those milestones. This little lady has a fun loving disposition and is beyond sweet (she kept handing me little pieces of air....it was adorable). Hope you enjoy, happy 13 months!!

New Jersey Family Photographer | holiday shoot

This saturday I met up with some friends for their annual holiday portraits. We were hoping to do the shoot at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, however the park was closed. So we made a spontaneous decision to do the shoot in Hoboken, using building textures and colors as our inspiration. In the end, I think it was meant to be. I am so in love with everything about this shoot. Yay!

Brooklyn Family Photographer | Maya's shoot

I finished off my time in Brooklyn on Wednesday at sunset with Maya and her parents. It was so nice meeting the entire family, Maya definitely kept us entertained. She even had a stranger "oohing and ahhing" over how adorable she was. She really worked it for the camera, showing us her excited face, her happy face and her serious face. Mini model in the making? I think so!

Manhattan Baby Photographer | Hudson's 1 year shoot

This morning I met up with an adorable little guy named Hudson. His parents opted to meet me in DUMBO since its such an awesome backdrop for a shoot (although a bit chilly today!) and we got to work. Hudson's 1 year birthday is coming up next month, and what better way to document his milestone with portraits plus a balloon or two! I'm loving our results, hope you do too...

Manhattan Baby Photographer | Shane's 1 year shoot

Yesterday I met up with Shane and her parents for her 1 year photo shoot. It seems like yesterday we were shooting her newborn photographs, and now she's walking around and exploring the world! Our shoot took place in DUMBO which was a perfect spot with the carousel and views of the Brooklyn Bridge. I'm loving how her hot pink is popping against the background. Adorable!
